The duty-free “slop shop”
A duty-free shop existed from the start on Frigg, being located on the middle deck to begin with and later in a container under the helideck which had earlier been a coffee bar.
This “slop shop” sold everything found in duty-free stores at airports ? with the exception of alcohol. The range included cigarettes, tobacco, chocolate and a big selection of deodorants and perfumes.
Although the shop was very popular with the workforce, the customs authorities in Stavanger put their foot down around 2000 and declared these sales to be illegal. That eliminated the duty-free benefit. At about the same time, the shop changed supplier from Erling Kvaale in Oslo to a Bergen company with a much poorer range. Sales accordingly declined considerably during the final six years.
