Installing the flare platform
The flare platform was designed jointly by Elf and the Compagnie Française d'Enterprises Metalliques (CFEM) yard.
Fabricated by the latter in Rouen, it was installed in October 1975. The platform was attached to a foundation on the seabed by a universal joint, allowing it to move horizontally with waves and current.
Tied back to TP1 by a flowline and umbilical, it was used to burn off gas during start-up operations and also acted as a safety valve should excess pressure arise in the Frigg production system.
The flare platform was shut down in the 1990s after gas processing had ceased on TP1, and was later removed.
