The licence for 25/1, in Norwegian waters, was awarded the year before that for 10/1, in British waters. Geologists already suspected the field existed and the area had been marked on seismic maps as of potential interest. Blocks were awarded at the discretion of the UK’s Ministry of Power (and successor bodies) on the basis of the programme of work submitted.

The third licensing round was launched in 1969, and on 8th June 1970, licence number P118 formally allocated block 10/1 to Total.
