Elf oppdager et oljefelt
Elf Aquitaine Norge oppdaget sitt første oljefelt høsten 1987 ca 32 km sørøst for Friggfeltet.
Feltet ligger i blokkene 25/5 (noen reserver også funnet i blokk 25/2) i Hugin og Sleipner formasjonene på ca. 3000 meters dybde og 120 meters vanndyp. Utvinningstillatelsene fikk numrene PL026 og PL102, tildelt henholdsvis i 1969 og 1985.
Frøy feltet ble vedtatt utbygd av Stortinget i mai 1992. Rettighetshaverne var operatøren Elf Aquitaine Norge med om lag 25 prosent, TOTAL med 15 prosent, Norsk Hydro med 6 prosent og Statoil med 54 prosent, hvorav SDØE hadde 42 prosent.
