Feltet er oppkalt etter den norrøne guden Heimdall.
Det går mange forskjellige myter om Heimdall, blant annet skal han være sønn av ni mødre, han skal ha tenner av gull og være den «hviteste av æsene». Heimdall er guden som blåser i gjallarhornet før Ragnarok, og han vokter også gudenes Bifrost (regnbuen). I et eddadikt omtales Heimdall også som stamfar for de tre stendene; treller, bønder og jarler.
